Early Childhood Center Co-Director – Part-Time

Responsible for the direction, oversight, quality, and fiscal management of a  38 child Early Childhood Center.  Shares job with another Co-Director and works an average of 20 hours a week.

 Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Supports The Community House programs, goals and mission and the philosophy of the ECC.
  • Maintains NAEYC standards/criteria in order to meet all regulations to maintain accreditation.
  • Maintains state and county regulations for Child Day Care licensure.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, schedules and evaluates the Early Childhood Center staff.
  • Prepares, monitors the Early Childhood Center Department budget.
  • Works with the Director of Communications on marketing the Early Childhood Center in order to keep Center enrollment at optimum levels.
  • Plans for, orders, and maintains materials and equipment for classrooms, staff and office.
  • Organizes individual classroom staff and conducts all staff meetings.
  • Provides for ongoing staff development.
  • Supervises planning and implementation of curriculum.
  • Facilitates parent contact in regard to waiting list and enrollment, orientation, parent conferences, monthly newsletters; serves as staff liaison to ECC Parent Group and staff liaison to Child Care Advisory Board.
  • Maintains records for all staff and enrolled children
  • Coordinates food service with Banquet and Catering Department.
  • Arranges for public relations activities involving the ECC.  These activities include planting on Earth Day, including the Baldwin House in some ECC activities, open houses, writing articles for local paper.
  • Attends all management and staff meetings.
  • Prepares periodic reports for the President for inclusion in report to the Board of Directors of The Community House.
  • Encouraged to attend board Meetings to which invited.

 Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises all ECC staff which includes the Head Teachers, Teachers, Assistant Teachers, Substitute Teachers and Interns.
  • Hires, disciplines and recommends the termination of employees as needed.
  • Prepares and conducts Performance Reviews; recommends appropriate salary increases.

Education, Job Knowledge and Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Degree in early childhood education, child development or related field plus administrative/supervisory experience and teaching experience in Early Childhood preferred. 
  • Must have minimum qualifications of completion of 60 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university and completion of not less than 12 semester hours in child development, child psychology or early childhood education.
  • Two years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to both children and adults.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Good verbal, writing and telephone skills.
  • Basic financial background with ability to write and interpret budgets.
  • Desire and ability to meet new people and new situations.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Able to perform numerous tasks simultaneously and meet required deadlines.
  • Able to keep the necessary proprietary information confidential. 
  • Computer experience with working knowledge of Word and Excel preferred.  Ability to learn internal software programs.
  • Must be able to operate computer, telephone, calculator, fax, copy and various other office machines.
  • Able to define problems and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to deal with abstract as well as with concrete problematic people/children and situations such as dissatisfied and irate parents and children.

 Employee and Public Contact:

  • Daily contact with ECC staff, children, parents. 
  • Regular contact with licensing consultant, NAEYC personnel, and prospective parents.
  • Regular contact with Accounting, Operations, and Banquet and Catering Departments.
  • Works with other department staffs at The Community House.

 Physical Demands:

  • Job occasionally requires standing, sitting, stooping, bending, and lifting  (may be over 25 pounds) children.

 Working Conditions and Environment:

    • Works part-time; 40 hours bi-weekly on a schedule agreed to between Co-Directors. 
    • Occasionally works more than the 40 hours in a pay period.
    • Directors should schedule Earned Time Off (ETO) so that they are not both away from work on the same day.
    • May work some evenings and weekends in order to attend/conduct meetings and attend other activities. 
    • Occasionally travels off site for meetings and to visit other childcare centers.
