The Student OUR TOWN program encourages young people to participate in the artistic creative process. Student OUR TOWN is an exhibit of student art from grades K-12 from more than 30 area public and private schools.
Teachers are asked to select and then submit art work for display at The Community House. Both the high school and middle school student artwork will be juried and gift certificates to a local art store will be given to these particular students. Two award ceremonies will be held to recognize these students on Wednesday, September 29 (high/middle school) and Thursday, September 30 (elementary). All award-winning high school artwork is displayed during the adult OUR TOWN exhibit in October.
This is a unique event in our community. It is often the first time many elementary age children receive recognition for something they have accomplished. It is also fairly unique in that it recognizes artistic achievement as opposed to athletic achievement. Student OUR TOWN is truly a school/community partnership of The Community House and neighboring schools.
In conjunction with the program, 5 free art workshops will be offered on Saturday, October 2:
- Marbled Painting: Zoo Animals; grades K-2
- Impressionist Autumn Trees; grades K-2
- African Sunset: Silhoutte Landscapes Collage; grades 3-5
- Metal Repousse: Masks from Around the World; grades 6-10
Of particular interest and new this year is "Portfolio Review and Advice on Applying to Art School," a 1-hour lecture (1p-11AM, October 2) followed by one-on-one sessions for high school students to receive directional support for portfolios and assistance in art school selection. Call 248.644.5832 to make an appointment.
Student OUR TOWN is open to the public from Wednesday, September 29 - Wednesday, October 6.
