As you now know, on March 23, 2020, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive order for people to “shelter at home” with the exception of critical, emergency, essential personnel. Consistent with her directive, and in line with our own safety and health standards and protocols, The Community House has temporarily CLOSED its building to the public and will now be operating minimally, remotely. In some cases, we will be open virtually. It is the first time in the history of this 97-year old nonprofit, charitable organization that The Community House building itself is closed for such an extended period of time. Given the uncertainty, and out of an abundance of extraordinary caution, we have made the difficult decision to cancel BOTH the Spring and Summer 2020 Classes/Programs at The Community House, effective immediately. For those class takers who were enrolled in Spring classes we will be issuing future class credits. We must and will continue to place the safety and health of our guests, supporters, volunteers and staff - first - and have done so in line with our own standards and protocols, and consistent with the Governor’s latest orders. Separately, out of an abundance of solidarity with Community House families with children, and the likely pent up demand to help our children recover from the shelter at home order, if lifted in time, The Community House plans to operate our June 2020 summer camps as planned. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the coronavirus pandemic, precautions and recommendations/orders from state and local officials including the Office of Governor. Be assured The Community House is doing everything it can to be ready to physically re-open - as soon as social distancing and sheltering in place is lifted - and when it is as humanly safe and healthy for all concerned. This too shall pass. When it does, we will be there for you. Thank you all for your support, kind words, and generosity during this extraordinary time of crisis. Be well. Stay safe.
